Operation Theatre Technology

As an operation theatre technician, you will be primarily working on maintaining and preparing an operation theatre for surgery. You will also provide technical assistance to surgeons during the operation.

What do operation theatre technologists do?

An operation theatre technician usually works inside the operation theatre in a hospital set up. Their work mainly includes setting up the OT and instrument trolleys for specific surgeries, positioning the operation table and patient etc. They also provide assistance to the surgeons during surgery and do autoclaving and preparation of sterile supplies required for use in the operation theatre.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Prepare operating rooms for surgery
  • Checked Sterilize equipment and make sure that there are adequate supplies for surgery
  • Checked Ready patients for surgery, such as by washing and disinfecting incision sites
  • Checked Help surgeons during surgery by passing them instruments and other sterile supplies
  • Checked Hold retractors and hold internal organs in place during the procedure, or set up robotic surgical equipment
  • Checked Prepare sterile solutions and medications used in surgery and check that all surgical equipment are working properly
  • Checked Handle specimens taken for laboratory analysis
  • Checked Apply bandages and other dressings to the incision site after surgery
  • Checked Help transfer patients to recovery rooms

How to become an Operation Theatre Technologist

Step 1
Take Science stream with Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the 10+2 level and securing a good aggregate percentage is essential for admission to an undergraduate course in OT technology.

Step 2
Take BSc Operation Theatre Technology

After plus two, you may do a bachelor’s degree in Operation theatre technology which is of 3 to 3 ½ years duration.


Note:

A 2 year diploma course in Operation theatre technology can be taken after 10+2. Some institutions allow lateral entry into the second year of an undergraduate course after completing the diploma qualification.

Step 3
Take MSc Operation Theatre Technology

After completing BSc, you can take a postgraduate degree in Operation theatre technology.


Note:

MSc Operation theatre technology course can also be taken up after a Bachelor’s degree in medicine.

  • Candidate must have completed a B.Sc. in Medical Technology with OT & Anesthesia as specialization or equivalent from a recognized college/ university.

    Candidate must have completed a bachelors in Life Sciences from a recognized college/ university and must have completed Diploma/ Certificate program in OT/ Anaesthesia Technology with minimum two Year of work experience in the department of OT/ Anaesthesia Technology from a reputed institute.

    or

    Candidate must have completed a bachelors in Microbiology/ Chemistry/ Medicine/ Ayurveda/ Homeopathy/ Unani from a recognized college/ university.

  • Candidates will be short listed based on their performance in the qualifying examinations and will be called fro SIHS entrance examination, personal interview and a written test.

OT technologists must pay close attention to their work while assisting in an operation. For example, in providing the correct sterile equipment to surgeons.

OT technologists should be comfortable handling delicate equipment and sterile supplies.

OT technologists should be comfortable standing for extended periods while assisting in long surgical procedures.
