Animator

As an Animator, you would be making drawings come to life by creating images called frames, which when moved in rapid succession makes objects appear to move.

What do animators do?

Animators work in 2D illustrations, 3D animation or computer-generated animation to create a cartoon story for movies, videos, games and advertisements. Animators create storyboards that illustrate the key scenes and flow of the story. They work in collaboration with their clients, coming up with the key events of the story from the ideas conceptualized by their clients and then develop the characters, scenes and backgrounds as well as the movements of the characters in the frame sequence. They also work on the voices or audio and the soundtrack for the project.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Integrating images with background graphics, special effects and other animation elements to create high quality 2D, and 3D character animations
  • Checked Working together with editors to ensure synchronization of frames and audio

  • Checked Debugging and making edits after review with clients
  • Checked Collaborating with photographers, printers, website designers, account executives and marketing specialists to complete the project as per clients requirement
  • Checked Exploring new tools and applications, enhancing creative and technical skills

How to become an Animator

Step 1
Take any stream in +2

Students who have passed 10+2 (any stream- Science, Commerce or Humanities and Arts)from a recognized board are eligible to pursue their career in animation.


Note:

Attending drawing classes and participation in drawing competitions are highly recommended. Also an orientation in use of computer software will be useful.

Step 2
Take BA/BS or BFA in Animation

Take a bachelor of arts/science/fine arts degree in Animation which is of 3 year duration.


Note:

1-2 year diploma programs in animation are available.

Step 3
Take MA/ M.Sc Animation

Take master of arts/ science in Animation which is of 2 year duration.

PG diploma/ various certification courses are available

  • Any bachelor's degree from a recognised University/College with a minimum of 60% marks.

Foreign (MA in Animation from university of south wales)

  • A 3 year bachelor’s degree with an average of at least 60% Or A 4 year bachelor’s degree with an overall average of at least 55%.
  • HSC (12th standard) English at 65% or above.

Creativity

An animator must possess creativity in order to generate ideas and bring them to fruition. They should make their mark and create original animations that people will remember with pleasure.

Communication skills

Animators must be able to communicate with other artists, as well as external contractors clearly. So interpersonal and communication skills are highly required.

Team skills

Team skills are highly important for animators because they will work with many other artists, photographers, web designers and game engineers to ensure that art and animations are properly implemented in the project.

Time management skills

Animators must possess time management skills as they need to prioritize, multitask, and meet tight deadlines.

Analyzing skills

An animator must have analyzing skills as they need to pay attention to small details and be keen in observation and analysis of movements, expressions and backgrounds in order to create animations that are realistic.

Drawing & graphic designing skills

It's important for animators to have good artistic skills as they need to create aesthetically appealing frames and figures, they also need to possess graphic designing skills since they have to give visual effects to the figures created and make them appear to come alive.
