Graphic Designer

As a graphic designer you will create visual impact using your creative skills and computer software tools. You will use shapes, colors, and fonts, on print design, websites and social media to communicate your message.

What do they Graphic designers do?

Graphic designers are visual communicators. They generate digital images by incorporating the use of computer software and art concepts to produce and deliver ideas to a client that would inform, inspire, or motivate a consumer. They will be working for various products and activities, such as websites, magazines, posters, advertising, books, computer games and product packaging.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Conducting meetings with potential partners/clients
  • Checked Interacting with clients to discuss design plans according to their needs
  • Checked Scheduling projects and defining budget constraints
  • Checked Preparing layouts and discussing the planned layout with art directors and the clients
  • Checked Creating unique illustrations and designs using software or by hand
  • Checked Choosing colour combinations, fonts and other elements to make the product look attractive to the viewers
  • Checked Working with copywriters, creative directors, production coordinators and illustrators to produce final design
  • Checked Amending designs after feedback
  • Checked Producing and presenting to clients final designs for logos, posters, cards, advertisements and product packaging materials

How to become a graphic designer?

Step 1
Take any stream in +2

Candidates who have appeared for a 10 + 2 examination, or its educational equivalent in any discipline (e.g: Science, Commerce, Arts) with an interest in Design & Innovation is eligible for a bachelors in design.


Note:

For Design courses at IITs and few other universities one must have studied Science with Maths in Class XII.

Step 2
Bachelor’s degree in design (B.Des in Graphics )

Take Bachelor’s degree in design with specialisation in Graphics from recognised Institute/College/University which is of 4 years duration


Note:

Diploma in graphic designing (6 months- 2 years) is also available.

Step 3
Master of Science in Design ( M.Des Graphics)

Take master course in design which is of 2 years from a recognized university.

PG Diploma in graphic designing is available.

Creativity

Graphic designers are creative thinkers. They will be conveying ideas through creative text and image which will help to sell company’s product. They also have to use creative thinking to generate solutions for their clients.

Computer skills

Graphic designers must possess various forms of technological skills.They need to be comfortable with design software, such as Quark, InDesign, and Adobe.They also need to know the basics of web design.

Graphic designers might have to handle multiple projects at once. Thus they have to have strong time management skills. They should be able to multitask, juggle multiple assignments over long periods, and meet all established deadlines.
