Operations Management

As an operations manager, you will be to plan strategies to convert the production process in to more effective process and thereby increasing profit of the business. You have to analyse and evaluate the current process and suggest changes if required.

What do Operations managers do?

An operation manager communicates job expectations, planning, monitoring and evaluating their performance. They play an important role in recruiting, coaching the employees. They also have to forecast the market trends, prepare budget, and plan for efficient production process.

What does a typical day at work involve?

How to become an Operations Manager?

Step 1
Take any stream at +2 Level

To take up an undergraduate course in Operations Management you may take any stream at +2 level but taking commerce stream will give you a better foundation for the course.

Step 2
Take BBA with Operation Management / Bachelor’s degree in any discipline

Taking BBA in Operations Management or a bachelor’s course in any discipline including BTech/BE will make you eligible to take up postgraduate studies in Operation Management. These programs are usually of 3 or 4 years duration.


Note:

A certificate program in Operations management is offered in distance mode by some institutes (NMIMS) for candidates with 2 years relevant experience after +2 qualification.

Step 3
Take MBA with specialization in Operation Managements

Postgraduate studies in Management (PGDM/PGPM or MBA) has specialisation in Operations Management and is available in many Universities and Institutes of Management. This is a 2 year program which can be taken up after graduation. An MSc-Business program with Operations Management is offered by some Foreign Universities.


Note:

A postgraduate diploma program in Operations management is offered online (by IGNOU) which has a minimum duration of 1 year.

Step 4
Take a Doctoral program in Operations Management

The Fellow Programme in Management (Operations Management) offered by IIMs is equivalent to a PhD . The Programme which includes two years of course work followed by upto three years of research, aims to prepare students for careers in teaching and those that require advanced analytical research in management.
