Computer Science Engineering

As a computer science engineer, you will be the creative mind behind the underlying systems that computers, other electronic devices and control networks operate on.

What does a computer science engineer do?

Computer science engineers design and develop algorithms and software solutions for professional and personal needs. They work on building computer systems software like computing utilities and operating systems, and applications software like web browsers and user-focused programs.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Conduct analysis of users’ needs and design software solutions to suit their needs
  • Checked Develop and integrate components of applications and systems
  • Checked Create algorithms, models and flowcharts for programmers to prepare software code required for an application
  • Checked Carry out software maintenance and testing
  • Checked Undertake discussions and collaboration with other computer science engineers
  • Checked Recommend software system upgrades for customers to create optimum software solutions
  • Checked Prepare documentation of various aspects of an application or system as reference for future upgrades and maintenance

What areas can a computer science engineer specialise in?

Deals with the design of distributed system software to manage and coordinate the activities of distributed systems consisting of a collection of autonomous computers, connected through a network.
This is an advanced research area on topics such as design and analysis of algorithms, graph and hypergraph algorithms, randomized and approximation algorithms, computational number theory, combinatorial geometry, computational geometry, digital geometry, and discrete geometry.
This includes the study of AI principles and techniques, as well as topics such as knowledge representation, logical reasoning, robotics, machine learning, cognition, probabilistic modeling and natural language processing
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary specialization covering advanced algorithms, databases, modeling, simulation and networking, focusing on computational challenges and solutions to be applied in biological and medical informatics.
This specialisation focuses on designing and developing secure and safety-critical systems on the internet and for confidential communications such as credit card transactions, email and messaging.
Software engineering deals with the design, development and application of software including programming languages, compilers, and databases.
This specialisation focuses on effective engagement of computer vision technologies to solve practical problems in a variety of domains such as medical diagnosis, disease modelling, telemedicine, and human activity analysis.

How to become a computer science engineer?

Step 1
Take Science stream with Computer Science

Taking a computer science stream at the 10+2 level will be an advantage for the students if they go for a B.Tech in computer science, even though it is not necessary. Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects at the 10+2 level to be eligible for admission to an undergraduate course in Computer Science Engineering.

Step 2
Take BTech/BE in Computer Science

Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology is a four year course offered by Universities and Institutes of Technology in India and abroad. Some institutions are offering dual degree programs in computer science, which is five year long, at the end of the program the student will be awarded both B.Tech and M.Tech degrees.

Step 3
Take M.Tech/MS in computer science engineering

After graduation, you can take an M Tech/ME in computer science engineering which are two year long programs. You can also take up the equivalent MS degree course offered by foreign universities and select institutions in India.

Step 4
Take a PhD

After post graduation, you can take a PhD in computer science specializations which will allow you to take up a career in research and academia.

Note :

There are select institutions which offer an integrated MTech-PhD program.

Requirements for masters in computer science engineering

Requirements for admission into a PG course in one of the top institutions to help you get an overall picture

India (MTech Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Bombay))

Should have qualified in one of the following with 60% marks ( or 6.0 CGPA)

  • BE / BTech/ AMIE (Computer Science) from a recognised institution/ Professional body.
  • MCA (with Physics and Mathematics at B Sc level)
  • Valid score in GATE (CS) ( BTech graduates from IITs with CGPA 8.0 or above do not require GATE qualification for admission to MTech)

Foreign (MS Computational Science & Engineering at Purdue University)

  • Should have a 4 year bachelor degree in computer science with a CGPA of 8.5
  • 3 letters of recommendation preferably from your professors at under graduation programs. Purdue University gives importance to the institution from where you have done your UG studies.
  • Statement of purpose outlining your objectives, research interests and experience.
  • English Proficiency: One of the following scores is recommended
  • TOEFL ( with a total of 100 on the internet-based test with no subscale score lower than 22)
  • ELTS (with overall band score of at least 7.5, with no single band score lower than 7.0)

Skills Required

Analytical skills

Computer science engineers have to design complex algorithms after doing a detailed analysis of the user requirements. This requires good analytical skills

Communication skills

Effective communication, both with the clients who are the end users and with co-developers and programmers is highly essential.

Creativity

Designing new software solutions and developing innovative applications requires you to be highly creative.

Detail oriented

It may be essential to work on many parts of an application or system at the same time and you must therefore be able to concentrate and pay attention to detail.

Interpersonal skills

Work is often in a team with many others who contribute to designing, developing, and programming tasks. This warrants good interpersonal skills.

Problem-solving skills

In order to effectively design new applications as per requirement, troubleshoot existing ones and coordinate work on different parts of a system, good problem solving ability is required.
