As a mechanical engineer, you will be involved in the design, development, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical products. And you would also assist in the installations and final commissioning of differents projects on the site.
A mechanical engineer will be involved in different works and leadership roles which are related to mechanical systems including the design, development, testing and maintenance of mechanical machines and devices.
Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects at the 10+2 level to be eligible for admission to an undergraduate course in Mechanical Engineering. Although you can take Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology or a Technical Vocational subject as a compulsory third subject, it is advisable to take chemistry since it is an important component in the entrance examinations for engineering courses in India
Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology is a four year course offered by Universities and Institutes of Technology in India and abroad.
Some institutions allow lateral entry into second year of BTech for diploma holders in mechanical Engineering.
After graduation, you can take an M Tech / ME degree course in mechanical engineering, which is of 2 year duration. You can also take up the equivalent MS degree course offered by foreign universities and by select institutions in India.
Some institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology offer an integrated dual degree combining B Tech and M Tech which is of 5 year duration.
After post graduation, you can take a PhD in Mechanical engineering specialisations which will enable you to take up research oriented career in the academia or the industry.
There are select institutions which offer integrated an MTech-PhD program.

Mechanical engineers need to be comfortable using math especially calculus and statistics in order to solve problems.
A mechanical engineer should have the skill in finding solutions to the problems at hand using mechanical or thermal devices. A high level of technical and scientific knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to practical problems is a necessity.
Mechanical engineers need to be strong analytical thinkers to understand and analyse a problem.
A mechanical engineer should have good oral communication skills and confidence in dealing with a range of people including clients, contractors, designers, directors and plant operators.
Engineers often work in groups to invent technologies and solve problems. They, therefore, need to have good interpersonal skills and should be able to work with a diverse team of people coming from different backgrounds.
