As an ocean engineer and naval architect, you will be studying the oceanic environment and working on designing, building and maintaining ships, boats, other marine vessels and offshore structures.
Ocean engineers are responsible for the design, analysis, operation and planning of systems that operate in an oceanic environment. They will study the ocean and sea environment in order to understand how salt water affects watercraft and vessels both civil and military, including Merchant ships, Oil/Gas Tankers, and Cargo Ships.
Naval Architects mainly work on the design, construction and repair of ships, boats and other marine vessels and offshore structures.
Studying Physics, Chemistry and Maths at the 10+2 level and securing a minimum score in these subjects would be a prerequisite for admission into engineering courses.
The common specialisation offered at the UG level in this area is Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture. You can either go for a B.Tech or a dual degree (5 year Integrated B.Tech/M.Tech).
Some institutions allow lateral entry into second year of BTech for diploma holders in mechanical Engineering.
After completing the UG degree, you can pursue a master’s in Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture.
