Dairy Sciences And Technology

As a graduate in Dairy Sciences and Technology, you would focusing on every stage starting from processing, management and final consumption of milk by working on acquiring, processing, storage, packing and final distribution of the milk to improve animal welfare and productivity and also to ensure the quality of milk and milk products.

What do dairy scientist do?

Dairy scientists do research on how to efficiently produce and process milk. They may also have to supervise or oversee machineries, ensure proper food and nutrition for livestock and domestic animals, conduct experiments to determine the effects of different foods and environments on the quality and quantity of the milk, use and develop new technologies and practices in taking care of livestock, evaluate and grade the dairy animals and the farm.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Checking the quality of milk products by testing on samples
  • Checked Checking the requirements of dairy animals and nutritive value of feed materials
  • Checked Assisting the manager in the financial and physical performance of the farm
  • Checked Carrying out experiments to determine the effects of different kinds of feed on the milk produced
  • Checked Maintaining records, and preparing reports and correspondence related to the work
  • Checked Studying the impacts of environmental conditions on quantity, quality, and nutritive value of milk produced
  • Checked Developing improved care and management practices of dairy herds
  • Checked Evaluating the safety of buildings and pieces of equipment
  • Checked Carrying out breeding programs to improve dairy breeds by understanding the physiology of reproduction and lactation

What are the specialisations in Dairy Sciences and Technology?

Dairy engineering is the area that deals with the use of technology to make the dairy processing more advanced and useful. This field also focuses on maintaining machinery and developing new machineries.
This field focuses on the various chemical properties of the milk, prevent spoilage and also develop various methods of preservation and study both positive and negative effects of microbes in various dairy products.
This area focus on all areas of the whole process starting from procuring the milk to sale and consumption of milk. This includes storing, processing, packing etc.
This area deals with the management of activities and processes in the farm. This also include entrepreneurship development in milk preservation and dairy processing.
