The Indian Police Force is the law enforcement agency of the country constituted by the Central Armed Police Forces and the State Police Forces of the Individual states.

Central Armed Forces

The Central Armed Forces are under the ministry of home affairs and is responsible for managing security threats within the country. It comprises of the following forces

  • Border Security Force (BSF)
  • Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
  • Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
  • Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
  • National Security Guard (NSG)

State Police Force

State Police Force comes under the ministry of home affairs in the states, which is responsible for maintaining law and order across the state jurisdiction.

The different ranks in the Police Force fall under 3 categories and are roughly the same in all states.

  1. IPS officers (Selected by the Civil Services Exam of UPSC). Ranks included are Director General of Police (DGP) Additional Director General Of Police (ADGP), Inspector General Of Police/ Special Inspector General Of Police (IGP/SIGP), Deputy Inspector General Of Police (DIG), Superintendent of Police/Deputy Commissioner Of Police (SP/DCP) and Additional Superintendent Of Police/Deputy Commissioner of Police (ASP/DCP)
  2. State Police Gazetted Officers. Additional Superintendent Of Police/Deputy Commissioner of Police (ASP/DCP) and Deputy Superintendent of Police/Assistant Commissioner Of Police (DSP/ACP) are Gazetted officers under State Police cadre. These police officers can seniority wise be promoted to IPS cadre.
  3. State Police non-Gazetted Officers. This includes the ranks of Police Inspector (P.I.) Assistant Police Inspector (A.P.I.) Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Assistant Police Sub-Inspector (ASI) Head Constable (HC) and Police Constable (PC).
