Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and virus. This field studies how these affect and are affected by the environment. This includes fundamental research on biochemistry, physiology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms.

What do microbiologists do?

A microbiologist has to identify and classify different organisms, plants and animals. They also have to isolate, maintain cultures of bacteria, fungi and other microscopic organisms for further references and studies.

What are the different specialisations in microbiology?

Microbial physiology is defined as the study of the cell structures and metabolism function in living organisms. It includes the study of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
Immunology is a very important branch of the medical and biological sciences and is the study of the immune system. Immunology includes charting, measuring, and contextualizing the physiological functioning of the immune system in states of both health and diseases.
Pathogenic microbiology is the study of mechanisms by which microorganisms cause diseases in humans.
Bacterial genetics is the study of how genetic information is transferred, either from a particular bacterium to its offspring or between interbreeding lines of bacteria, and how that genetic information is expressed.
Pathology is the study of diseases. It’s a bridge between science and medicine. It includes all aspect of patient care from diagnosis and treatment to using advanced technologies for preventing the disease.

How to become a Microbiologist?

Step 1
Take Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the 10+2 level and securing a 50% score in these subjects would be a prerequisite for admission into undergraduate courses in microbiology.

Step 2
Take BSc Microbiology

The common course offered at the UG level in this area is BSc Microbiology. The duration of the course is 3 years.


Note :

B.Sc. in Molecular Biology/Biological Sciences/Life Sciences are also considered as the eligibility for Master’s in Microbiology.

Step 3
Take MSc Microbiology

After completing the UG degree, you can go for MSc Microbiology. The duration of the course is 2 years.


Note :PG Diploma

You can also go for a PG diploma in Microbiology after UG which is of one year duration.

Step 4
Go for doctoral studies

After pursuing Master’s, you can directly go for M Phil/ PhD if your profile (including projects, research papers, and internships) and research proposal is excellent.
