Communications Management

As a Communications manager you will be responsible for effectively sending out your organisation’s internal and external messages. This includes communicating effectively with employees and management team as well as promoting your company’s mission products or services among the public.

What do Communications managers do?

Communications managers work closely with management teams and executives to give shape to the image and values of the company and develop methods of communicating them to the public using different forms of media. They serve as the company’s media liaison and spokesperson and it is their responsibility to ensure that the messages sent out align with the business strategies of the company. They also work on effective dissemination of internal messages within the organisation.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Preparing detailed media reports, press releases, and marketing materials
  • Checked Conducting public meetings and conferences for popularity
  • Checked Identifying press opportunities and conducting press meets
  • Checked Dealing with doubts and queries from people at different levels
  • Checked Developing strategies to reach out to masses
  • Checked Developing content to be disseminated via social media, websites, newsletters, press releases and any other distribution channels
  • Checked Drafting written materials and prepare presentations for communicating with employees

How to become a Communication Manager?

Step 1
Take any stream at +2 level

Although choosing a particular stream at plus two level is not necessary for pursuing higher studies in Communication it is always better to choose Humanities with Journalism which will enable you to get basic understanding about Media and Communication.

Step 2
Take Bachelor’s in Communication and Journalism

The common course offered at the UG in this area is Bachelor of Communication and Journalism(BCJ). You can either go for three year BCJ or BA in Mass Communication.


Note:

Although taking Bachelors in Communication and journalism is the best option for becoming a Communication Manager, any other relevant undergraduate degree will also make you eligible for Masters in Communication.

Step 3
Take Master’s in Communication Management

After completing the UG, you can go for Masters in Communication with specialisation in Public Relations or Communication Management.You can either go for MA in Communication or MCJ (Master of Communication and Journalism). These are usually 2 year programs.


Note :

You can also take up an MBA in Communication Management which is of 2 years duration.
