Physical Education

As a Physical Educator you will be responsible for promoting physical activity and well being among people of all ages, ranging from students in schools and colleges to youth and adults, through a variety of sporting activities.

What do Physical Educators do?

Physical Education graduates and postgraduates usually take up employment in educational institutions where they teach physical activities and sports to children from the kindergarten level through high school and college. They may also act as health instructors in these institutions providing lessons in CPR, first aid and overall health to students. They may serve as coaches for sports teams of schools, colleges or other sports organisations and clubs.

With postgraduate, doctoral or management qualifications they may also undertake careers in Sports Sciences and Athletics Management.

What does a typical day at work involve?

The tasks of Physical education teachers in a typical day’s work may vary depending up on their areas of specialisation. These may involve

  • Checked Creating and Documenting Lesson plans
  • Checked Conducting Fitness Training sessions for the students
  • Checked Organizing individual and team sporting activities for students
  • Checked Monitoring the students and trainees in the process of exercise and making sure that they are using the correct techniques
  • Checked Teaching the importance of developing healthy habits and lifestyles to students
  • Checked Organising recreational games and activities
  • Checked Teaching different modules of Physical Education and sports sciences at the Senior Secondary and university levels
  • Checked Those who are specialised and are eligible, also give emergency first aid when required

How to become a Physical Educator

Step 1
Take any stream at +2 level

Taking any stream in +2 would make you eligible for under graduation degree in this field.


Note :

Sports participation is recommended as it gives you an upper hand in getting admission for the under graduation program.

Step 2
Take B.P. ED

Bachelor’s degree is a 2 years course. Admission is generally merit based. But it may vary depending on the institutions.


Note:

You can also opt B.Ed physical education or BA physical education.

Step 3
Take M.P.ED

This is 2 years course which would help in specialising in the field.

Skills Required

Physical stamina

Physical educator should have good physical stamina as they have to demonstrate and help students do the various physical exercises and activities. They should enjoy the activities and should have the ability to make it an enjoyable for others.

Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills are very necessary as they have to always work in teams. They have to motivate the students to participate in fitness and training programs

Observational skills

The physical educator has to supervise and monitor students and identify problems if any. They have to ensure none of the students are injured and provide first aid if there are any injuries.

Perseverance

Perseverance is a highly required skill for physical educators as training the students is a long process. The physical educators should have patience and should not be expecting immediate results.
